A wee glimpse of our story so far
We are the crazy couple that once travelled over two thousands kilometres in a wagon pulled by a mighty team of camels with fifty rescued animals in tow. These included doves, dogs, parrots, goats, a donkey and our dear rooster ,'The Colonel' and his nine girls.
We had been living on five acres in Alice Springs, the heart of Australia and when hay costs soared during the drought and our hay bill became far more costly than our mortgage, something had to give. We'd had no idea when we began rescuing needy, orphaned and abused camels that so many would find themselves to our door but we fell in love with these noble creatures and were determined to find a way to continue caring for them.
We sold our home, cleared our massive hay debt and with the funds that were left over, set off on a two year adventure with all these animals, even taking in others as we travelled that were considered dangerous and about to be shot- a billy goat, two more camels and a galah with a deadly bite.
It was a life changing adventure that pushed us past every limitation. There were moments I would sob in the dirt, snotty nosed and sunburnt, utterly exhausted and mad at myself for agreeing to go on Gills crazy adventure.
But there were many moments I never wanted this magical journey to end -sitting on the top of a sand dune watching the silver moon rise over a red and dusky desert, while our camels grazed around our wagon and the smoke from our camp fire mingled and danced with the days last light. Or sharing a camp fire under a vast starlit desert sky, my back leaning against a cud chewing camel, dogs lying in hollows they'd dug in the sand while our donkey Bella stood in the smoke and Banjo our billy goat, stood so close to the flames, every night he singed more from the end of his beard. During this phenomenal journey we developed relationships with all our animals that led us to travel in such harmony, our entire relationship with the animals we care for transformed forever. We began to experience with them a communion and intelligence that went beyond species.
We always wanted to purchase another home but have been so hands on caring for the animals and raising these costs ourselves, that it has not yet happened. However we have so much potential to create a stronger financial base for ourselves that would fully support our work with animals. The books about this amazing trip were finally finished and I would love a publisher for these who can really get them out into the world- this way I can focus on writing MORE books which is my passion. We also have boxes of tapes, taken during this trip that we would love to see transformed into a documentary.
Right now we need more visibility so that the gifts of this phenomenal journey can be shared, empowering us to create a much more solid financial position for all our work with animals.
